Beck’s official debut album Mellow Gold landed in 1994, just as alternative rock was hitting the mainstream. Led by the breakout single ‘Loser’—originally a rejected demo that became an unlikely anthem—it introduced Beck as a singular voice in left-field pop, blending surreal slacker humour with hip-hop beats and lo-fi textures. The album features a sample from Dr. John’s ‘I Walk on Guilded Splinters’ and was produced by Beck alongside Tom Rothrock, Rob Schnapf, and Karl Stephenson.
