Chicago soul institution Earth, Wind & Fire turn their 21st studio album into a seasonal retrofit, running Christmas standards through the same machinery that made their 70s records sparkle. ‘Joy To The World’ arrives with brass punching holes through the chorus, then ‘The Drummer Boy’ swaps its stiff march for layered African percussion. Then comes the cheekiest bit: ‘September’ is rebuilt as ‘December’, with remarkably little lyrical surgery and absolutely no shame about it. Philip Bailey’s falsetto still sails over the top and somehow the whole thing lands closer to festive funk than novelty-bin disaster.
